We are delighted to begin another exciting year of learning, discovery and new experiences together.

Year 5 and Year 6 are very special years in primary school. They are a time when children develop greater independence, confidence and responsibility as they prepare for the next stage of their education. Our aim is to provide a stimulating, challenging and enjoyable learning environment where every child feels valued, supported and encouraged to achieve their very best.

Expectations

In our classroom, we believe that the way we treat one another is just as important as what we learn. We have three important values that guide us in everything we do:

CALM:

We remain calm, focused and ready to learn. We listen carefully, think before we act and persevere when learning becomes challenging.

KIND:

We show kindness through our words and actions. We look after one another, celebrate each other’s successes and make sure everyone feels included, valued and supported.

RESPECTFUL:

We respect ourselves, each other, our school and the wider community. We listen to different ideas and opinions, use good manners and take pride in our behaviour and our learning.

These three words help us to create a learning environment which is safe and happy, a place where children are ready and willing to learn.

Learning and Education

We want our children to be curious, confident and enthusiastic learners. Our curriculum provides opportunities to develop knowledge and skills across all subjects while encouraging children to ask questions, think creatively, solve problems and make connections between their learning.

We place great importance on children becoming independent learners who take pride in their work and understand that mistakes are an important part of learning. We encourage children to challenge themselves, persevere and always strive to improve.

Please see the Autumn Term Curriculum Summary for information relating to what the children will be learning in Y5/6G this term.

Our education extends beyond the classroom. Throughout the year, children will have opportunities to take part in educational visits, visitors, practical experiences and enrichment activities that bring their learning to life.

Attendance and Punctuality

The school day starts promptly at 8:50am. From 8.50am until 9am, children will be busy completing times table, spelling and handwriting activities.

The school day ends at 3.20pm. If children are not collected, and contact has not been made with the school office, children will be placed in afterschool club at 3.30pm.

Homework

Children in Upper Key Stage Two are expected to complete two and a half hours of homework per week. This includes daily reading, TTRS, Emile and homework folder tasks.

New homework activities will be set each Wednesday and will be due in the following Monday.

Reading is a daily expectation, a minimum of four reads per week is expected. Reading is monitored daily. If a child has not read during the week, they will be asked to read during break time.

TTRockstars is a useful learning platform to help children increase their multiplication and division recall. Please ensure that you regularly revisit multiplication facts with your child. The children who are not confident with their times table knowledge find other maths concepts difficult due to their limited understanding of times tables.

If learning tasks are not completed during the school day, children will be expected to complete their learning tasks at home with the work returned to school the following morning.

P.E.

P.E. lessons will take place every Tuesday. Children are expected to attend school wearing their full P.E. kit.

Swimming lessons will take place on a Thursday. Year Six children will attend swimming during Autumn Term 1. Year Five children will attend throughout Autumn Term 2.

Class Dojo

Please monitor Class Dojo and ParentApp for school updates and key information.

This year, children will be awarded Class Dojo points for being kind, calm and respectful. They will be able to spend their awarded points at the school’s Class Dojo shop or continue to save up and add to their points in order to purchase a more valuable item.

We look forward to sharing this year’s learning journey with you and celebrating the children’s achievements throughout the year.

Together, we can make Year 5/6G a happy, successful and memorable year!
