Phonics & Early Reading

At Haydock English Martyrs’ we use Read Write Inc phonics programme to teach our children to read, write and spell. Read Write Inc starts in Nursery beginning with distinguishing between environmental sounds and progressing to learning the Set 1 Speed Sounds through the year. The Read Write Inc. learning journey then continues into Reception and Key Stage 1. Children are assessed every half term and therefore children’s learning is pitched perfectly for every child.

We teach Set 1 sounds first.

Children need to know sounds – not letter names – to read words.

Set 2 & Set 3 Sounds

The children then move onto Set 2 sounds and once the children know one way of reading and writing every sound, they start to learn spellings for each sound they already know.

Finally they move onto Set 3 sounds and they learn different ways of spelling sounds that they already know.  For example, they know ‘ay’ and now learn a-e and ai as other spellings for the same sound.

Book Bag Books

When the children reach Red Group and above, they begin to read a book every day in their phonics lesson.  These are closely matched to the books that are sent home.
