History Curriculum

Aims and Objectives

At Haydock English Martyrs’ we aim to provide a history curriculum which develops pupils’ sense of identity, encouraging them to learn from the past in order to inform the future. We aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity and provide them with a thorough understanding of the past both in Britain and in the wider world. We inspire pupils to think critically and ask historically valid questions when examining evidence, including artefacts from various eras in the past. In our school, history makes a significant contribution to citizenship education by teaching how Britain has developed as a democratic society. We teach children to understand how event in the past have influenced our lives today and to appreciate and respect the diversity in our country that has developed as a result of this.

History Across the School

At English Martyrs’ Catholic Primary School we make history an enjoyable learning experience. We encourage children to participate in a variety of historical experiences, through which we aim to build up the confidence and knowledge of all children.

EYFS – Children in the early years develop their knowledge of their own history, through the early learning objective of ‘Understanding of the World’. They participate in activities to help them understand changes in time, for example days of the week, months of the year, daily routines, special celebrations and that their own actions have and impact and influence on the future.   Here are some examples of the history work in Nursery and Reception.

KS1 – In KS1, children develop their historical skills of recognition, recall, sequencing, comparison and classification through the study of topics such as The Great Fire of London, Explorers, Local History, Seasides, Homes and Toys in the past. Children in KS1 focus on changes within living memory, drawing on information gathered from those within their families and school community and the influence significant events and individuals on how we live our lives today.  Here are some examples of the work in KS1.

KS2 – In KS2, children build on the historical skills they have developed in the earlier years to summarise and explain events in the past, make reasoned judgements, apply their knowledge evaluate the effects of different historical periods on life today and justify their responses using evidence that they have gathered from primary and secondary resources.

Children in KS2 study topics beginning in Pre-historical Britain, such as the Stone Age, Bronze Age and Iron Age, leading into and through the Roman era, Anglo-Saxon and Viking era, the Victorian era and WWII, alongside Ancient Civilizations from across the world and themes such as Local History and Crime and Punishment through these periods
